It’s the first week of January, which means the PGA Tour is back in Hawaii, which means we get our first glimpses of some new stuff pros have cooked up over their offseason.
First we got some news on the equipment front this week with Max Homa’s switch to Cobra. Now we’re getting glimpses of some swing stuff via Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland.
Not major changes, but interesting ones, so let’s break them down.
Morikawa’s new body waggle
A great spot here by the PGA Tour’s Sean Martin.
A new addition to Collin Morikawa’s move at The Sentry is a kind of pre-swing body waggle. As he’s getting set, you can see him turning his body to the left.
Collin Morikawa said he did a lot of off-season experimenting. One change was this Sam Snead-esque addition to his pre-shot routine.

If this was done a little faster, and immediately before he started his swing, I’d call this a pre-swing trigger, like the kind Sam Snead or Bobby Jones used to loosen up and generate some momentum. But Morikawa’s move is different. It’s slower, and happens comparatively earlier.
This is more of a pre-swing feel. A physical, last-second reminder Morikawa uses to feel himself turning his body more on the downswing, as he talked about following his third round:
“I just had to just tell myself that I can kind of rotate and stay in that position and that’s all it’s really doing. I’m not thinking about it. It’s saying, okay, you’re safe to go there, just let it go. And it’s been nice to see the cut’s been back a little bit more with a little bit more space…If you don’t rotate [your body] you kind of slide or you kind of stall. You have to use your hands and you have to kind of rotate and flip your hands. That’s not me. For me, it’s turn hard and hold the face”
There’s a good lesson here for the rest of us. You have less time than you think to use a swing thought during your swing (read more about that here). To use one successfully, you have to focus on it before your swing even starts.
Hovland’s rebooted double-pump
It’s been a few years since we got the Hovland double-pump drive, but it made a comeback at The Sentry.
Hasn’t done this in a while, but he used to bust out the double-pump when he needed to hit a draw.
Think it helps him turn a little more on the backswing, too.pic.twitter.com/Rh11ISWp4l

Hovland said in the past he used when he needed to hit a draw, or if he wanted to reach for a little extra speed. This double-pump swing started as a drill that helped him turn a little more on the backswing, which gave him more time to shallow the club in transition.
For whatever reason, Hovland hasn’t used the move as much in recent years. But he’s back on his own now following his recent coaching split with Golf Digest Top 50 Teacher Joe Mayo, and decided to bring it back.
