Golfer wins Powerball lottery by playing numbers from that day’s special round on the course – Australian Golf Digest

Anyone who has ever played Powerball or the lottery has used their “lucky” numbers at some point. Maybe it’s your birthday. Or your kids’ birthdays. Or your all-time favorite athlete’s number. (John Starks’ No. 3 for me. Look him up, kids. The Beastie Boys even mentioned him in a song. Ugh, look them up too while you’re at it.)

Of course, these numbers never seem to work and you may as well just let the machine pick your numbers. But one Maryland man recently proved that sometimes they do work.

According to the Maryland Lottery website and the Miami Herald, a Calvert County golfer turned a special round on the course into a big payday. The unidentified person apparently witnessed a hole-in-one by one of his playing partners on Dec. 21 (Good for him playing in the winter). Then he used what happened when filling out a Powerball ticket that wound up winning him $151,210 that night. Incredible.

The man told lottery officials he used the number 1 for obvious reasons. Then 17 because that’s what hole the ace came on. And 21 because of the date. Finally, he combined the two golf cart numbers used by the group that day, 5 and 8, to go with the number 58. It turned out to be a stroke of genius.

Also smart was playing a Powerball multiplier that times his initial $50,000 winnings by three. And this was after his buddy had to buy him drinks at the course. What a day!

The man also said he plans to use some of the winnings to buy new golf clubs. Good plan. But we also hope he buys the next round few rounds for his golf buds—especially whoever made that hole-in-one.
