Great backs Aussie charge despite stacked Paris field

Great backs Aussie charge despite stacked Paris field

Australia will have four genuine medal chances when golf action begins in Paris on Thursday afternoon (AEST).

Jason Day and Min Woo Lee will don the green and gold in the men’s competition, and Minjee Lee and Hannah Green for the women.

Stan Sport expert commentator Geoff Ogilvy said the Aussies chances were marginally better in the women’s, where Green and Lee are ranked 6th and 13th in the world.

But it will be the men who get first crack at Le Golf National, in the city’s south-west.

“We’ve got two legitimate guys that can win, absolutely,” Ogilvy said.

“Jason’s been playing well, he hasn’t won for a little bit but he’s made a bit of a comeback. He’s swinging it really well, seems up and about, happy to be there.

“He’s every chance – he knows how to win big tournaments and when you get the green and gold on, it’s different.

“And Min Woo Lee, he’s hasn’t won since since Royal Queensland last year in the Australian PGA, but he’s playing well.

“He’s a pretty passionate, exciting sort of guy and this is the sort of thing that’s going to light him up.”

If either of them manage to pull off the win, it will be against a world-class field.

Two of the three major winners this year are in the field, and the fourth is missing only on a technicality.

Eight of the top-10 ranked golfers in the world are competing. As no country can have more than four representatives, that number is effectively capped.

The two top-10 players missing are the fifth and sixth-ranked Americans – Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau, who last month won the US Open at Pinehurst.

Masters winner Scottie Scheffler, PGA Championship and British Open winner Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa the American representatives.

It’s why Ogilvy believes as good as the Aussies are, they’re up against it in Paris.

But perhaps unlike most other sports, golf regularly see’s bolters have a blinding week and win a major tournament.

“Scottie Scheffler has basically won every tournament this year – he’s won six tournaments and he’s been hard to beat.

“Xander Schauffele seems to have worked out how to win too and he’s just won two majors in the last couple of months.

“Rory McIlroy would have played the course here at French Open a lot too.

“But golf is a funny game.”

Min Woo Lee will be on the tee at 5.33pm, followed by Day two groups behind at 5.55pm.

The women’s competition will begin next Wednesday.

Geoff Ogilvy will appear on Stan Sport’s Olympics Daily and Paris Preview for the duration of the golf competition during Paris 2024.
