Have the Matildas qualified for the Olympics? Tournament structure explained
Qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games took place over three rounds.
As one of the five highest-ranked teams in the Asian Football Confederation, Australia bypassed the first round entirely.
The Matildas joined the action in the second round of qualifying, with twelve nations split into three groups.
The three group winners, Australia, Japan, North Korea, and best-ranked runner-up Uzbekistan progressed to the third and final round.
In this round, the four teams were split into pairs, and faced off over two legs.
The two winning nations — decided by aggregate scores — earned a ticket to Paris.
The Matildas progressed in emphatic fashion, while Japan edged past North Korea 2-1 on aggregate.
