Hazlewood cleared to return for third Test against India

Experienced Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will play the third Test against India at the Gabba after overcoming a side strain.

Victoria quick Scott Boland will make way for Hazlewood’s return.

Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed on Friday his side would otherwise remain unchanged, with the five-Test series locked at 1-1.

“Josh Hazlewood comes back,” Cummins said.

“He’s had no hiccups, he had a really good bowl yesterday and a few days previous.”

Hazlewood missed Australia’s convincing 10-wicket victory over India in the second Test at Adelaide Oval.

His place in Australia’s bowling attack was taken by Boland, who claimed match figures of 5-105.

Hazlewood admitted on Monday he was in a race against time to prove his fitness for the Brisbane Test.

He trained away from most of the Australia squad on Thursday, completing a session at Allan Border Field.

Hazlewood took 4-29 (13 overs) in India’s first innings in Australia’s opening-Test loss in Perth and 1-28 (21) in the tourists’ second knock.

Cummins said it was “tough” for Boland to miss the third Test after an impressive display in Adelaide.

“He was fantastic in Adelaide and unfortunately he’s spent quite a lot of time on the bench in the last 18 months and whenever he plays he’s fantastic,” he said.

“It’s a shame for Scotty but there’s still a fair bit to play out this series so I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t get another crack at some point.”
