After India survived the second session of play unscathed on Monday and Australia was desperate for a breakthrough, Pat Cummins threw the ball to the part-time offspinner.

It was a bold move as 31-year-old Head had a grand total of 13 Test wickets from his 52 matches over six years prior to this crunch fourth Test against India.

Four of those wickets came against Sri Lanka back in 2022, when he took his career-best figures — and first ever Test scalps — of 4/10 in just 17 deliveries.

The move proved a masterstroke, however, with the dangerous Rishabh Pant attempting to slog the part-timer over the fence and only managing to find Mitch Marsh in the deep, who took the catch as Pant departed for 30 from 104 balls.

It snapped an 88-run stand between Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal and sparked an eventual collapse of 7/34 as Australia toasted a famous victory by 184 runs.

Head’s celebration after the key breakthrough, sticking his pointer finger through a hole in his other hand with a deadpan look on his face, baffled everybody watching on.

It was a topic of discussion on Fox Cricket.

“We might have a new topic on The Big Break next Test match. Weirdest wicket celebrations ever seen,” Alyssa Healy said.

“Is that holed out?” Mark Howard asked.

“I’m not going to go there,” Healy jokingly replied. “I’m terrified to go there.”

The pair then joked they were lucky Isa Guha or Kerry O’Keeffe weren’t in commentary at the time.

We disagree with that last sentiment, the man known as “Skull” likely would have had a priceless anecdote or theory for the viewers.

But the truth finally came to light during Cummins’ post-match press conference, as you can see below.

It began with the Australian media manager being reluctant to recreate the potentially risque movement to show the skipper what Head had done.

Once the captain had been shown the gesture, he clarified what all the fuss was about.

“Sorry, yes, OK. I can explain that,” he said with a big grin and slightly flushed cheeks.

“It’s his finger’s so hot he’s got to put it in a cup of ice. That’s what it is.

“That’s normally the running joke. He was at the Gabba or somewhere and he got a wicket as well and he just goes straight to the fridge, grabs a bucket of ice, puts his finger in and just walks in front of (Nathan Lyon).

“Just like that. He thinks it’s very funny.

“So that’s what it would have been, nothing else.”

Head did take his second and so far only other wicket of the series in the third Test in Brisbane, having No. 11 Akash Deep stumped by Alex Carey for 31.

The commentary team on the Seven Network elaborated on the origin of the unique gesture and it turns out it began with that stunning effort in Sri Lanka two years ago.

“Now, great people in the back have said after he took 4/10 within 17 balls in Sri Lanka in 2022 he was quoted as saying, ‘I had to put the digit on ice’,” James Brayshaw said.

“So that was the celebration. He said ‘I just got him and I’m putting it back on ice’.”

Fellow commentator Greg Blewett was impressed.

“You have done some investigating, haven’t you, JB?” he said. “I had no idea what that was all about, good work.”

Brayshaw was quick to point out he hadn’t done the research.

“I would like to take credit, but I had nothing to do with it,” he said.

“I was handed it on a bit of paper. That was a good get from our team.”

So there you go, case closed. With Head’s finger likely on ice in the Australian dressing room right now, it remains to be seen whether we get a repeat of the move in the fifth Test in Sydney.
