Rising star Georgia Voll sent a timely reminder to the national selectors of her big-hitting capabilities before rain forced a premature end to the Governor General’s XI match against England at North Sydney Oval on Thursday.

The hosts posted 8-183 from 28.2 overs before the match was abandoned due to weather, denying Australian captain Alyssa Healy an opportunity to prove her fitness ahead of this weekend’s Ashes opener at the same venue. The veteran wicketkeeper was expected to don the gloves for the tour match as she continues her recovery from a knee injury sustained in November.
After England captain Heather Knight won the toss and chose to bowl first, Voll clobbered a 38-ball fifty in a 91-run opening partnership with Healy (38 from 33 balls) to get the Governor General’s XI off to a flying start.
However, England spinner Sophie Ecclestone removed both openers in quick succession after the Powerplay, with Voll bowled for 57 (42) after miscuing a slog-sweep.
The departure of young gun Charli Knott, bowled by Ecclestone for 17, prompted a frantic collapse of 5-11 from 29 balls as England’s spinners wreaked havoc on the green deck.
Ecclestone finished with 3-27 from five overs, while Charlie Dean (2-20 from five overs) helped rip through the Governor General’s XI middle order in a probing spell. Meanwhile, Tasmanian all-rounder Heather Graham was run out for a golden duck following a mid-pitch mix-up with Breakers wicketkeeper Tahlia Wilson, who was bowled by Dean the following over for 20.
“Obviously pretty disappointing with the rain around … but to get out there and spend some time in the middle was nice,” Voll told reporters after the match.
“It’s just about every opportunity I get, do the best I can … I’m just learning off the girls as much as I can and soaking up the experience.”

Voll, named in Australia’s squad for the white-ball leg of the Ashes campaign, got her international campaign off to a dream start last month by smacking a maiden ODI century against India in Brisbane.
However, despite accumulating 173 runs at 86.50 across the three-match series, she was dropped ahead of the ODI tour of New Zealand and replaced in the starting XI by Healy.
When asked about the potential of her featuring in the Ashes, Voll responded: “I think I’m ready.
“I’ve been playing domestic cricket for four or five years. I’m obviously still pretty young, so I’ve still got a lot of things to learn, but I think my game’s ready.
“If I’m called upon, then I think I can do a good job.”
Despite being in career-best form with the bat, Voll accepted she might need to continue carrying drinks throughout the Ashes if the Australian team’s at full strength.
“The girls literally smashed New Zealand … it’s pretty hard (to get a game) when the girls are doing so well,” Voll continued.
“Obviously I’m ready if I need to be called upon, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
The first ODI between Australia and England gets underway at North Sydney Oval on Sunday at 10.30am AEDT.
