India slammed for ‘arrogant’ move, Kohli mocked for ’embarrassing’ error ahead of Australia tour

India lost their first home Test series since 2012 to New Zealand after falling 2-0 down thanks to a 113 defeat in game 2 – but they have already turned their attention to the Australia tour.

With one game remaining in the series at home, the BCCI has named the Test squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series.

That has not impressed veteran cricket writer Robert Craddock, who told SEN Whateley that is shows a little bit of contempt for the Kiwis given that series is no longer in reach.

“But even the arrogance and I’ll put this one back to you,” Craddock said.

“I was stunned by how they arrogantly announced their team for Australia before the third Test.

“Like, they’ve got another Test to play, but they grandly announced their team to Australia.

“Like Mohammed Shami, who’s an absolute masterful bowler, they drew a line under him because he wasn’t playing domestic cricket.

“But I mean, I’d have been given him every chance (to face Australia) and I tweeted a video of him bowling in the nets.”

India has held the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since 2014-15, even winning the past two series held in Australia, but Craddock also believes it could be a below-par team that makes the trip down under this time round, with the batting line-up showing unusual signs of weakness.

“There’s no doubt Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in decline, they are not the batsman they were,” he said.

“Kohli missed a full toss in the first innings (against New Zealand), it was embarrassing stuff.

“Their batsman, because they play so much T20 cricket, they struggle to hold onto the rhythms of a probing Test match.

“You can say all you like about Bazball and how it’s reinvigorated Test cricket – and it has – and other nations have copied it and India love playing the bully boy. But sometimes you have to turn to a turning pitch and good bowling and India aren’t prepared to do it. So, they got what they deserved.”

He can see similarities with the Australian team, which has held the same core for so long that when changes are needed there’s no clear replacement putting their hands up for selection.

“They are an ageing team and they don’t know who their replacements are, which is staggering,” Craddock said.

“Their fast bowling pecking order with Shami out – who the Aussie batsman rates as harder to face than Bumrah – he’s not around and will miss the series. He’s omitted for selection after not getting there.

“They are vulnerable India. Australia can take them down and there’s a sense of deflation because if you beat India in India, beating them in Australia isn’t quite as illustrious.”
