Resuming at 0-172, Jaiswal and KL Rahul continued where they left off the previous evening, combining for India’s highest opening partnership in Tests in Australia.

Unbeaten on 90 overnight, Jaiswal brought up his fourth Test hundred with a ramp shot against Josh Hazlewood, with the Kookaburra landing on the Toblerone padding for his third six of the innings. Celebrating the milestone, he raised his arms and looked to the heavens before throwing a fist bump towards his teammates in the dugout.

The following over, Australian captain Pat Cummins missed a run-out chance at the non-striker’s end to hand Jaiswal a life on 101. However, the hosts finally unearthed their first breakthrough later in the same over, with Mitchell Starc nipping a length delivery away from Rahul and catching the outside edge, gone for 77.

Jaiswal and Padikkal continued grinding Australia’s weary bowlers into the dirt as the lunch break approached, with Cummins turning to Marnus Labuschagne’s bouncers and Travis Head’s part-time spin to no avail.

Hazlewood struggled to tame the fresh Kookaburra after Australia took the second new ball, spraying it down the leg side for four byes on two occasions.

However, the Bendemeer Bullet bounced back after the lunch break, finding Padikkal’s outside edge on the first delivery of the afternoon session, with Steve Smith holding onto a low catch at second slip.

Jaiswal continued on his merry way, racing towards 150 as Australia’s frustrations grew in the field; Travis Head missed another run-out chance, while wicketkeeper Alex Carey could only manage a fingertip after Jaiswal gloved a delivery down the leg side.

The marathon knock ended when Jaiswal slapped a half-tracker from Marsh directly towards point, with the rising star receiving a standing ovation from the Perth crowd as he trudged off.

Jaiswal’s departure sparked a brief collapse of 3-8 from 17 balls — Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant recklessly charged down the deck at spinner Nathan Lyon, stumped for 1 in comical fashion, before Cummins struck Dhruv Jurel on the knee roll with a delivery that kept low.

Meanwhile, Indian superstar Virat Kohli looked sublime with the willow, punching a six over backward point with an unsuspecting security guard copping a blow to the head.
