Ampcontrol innovative marine decarbonisation collaboration has been awarded the esteemed ‘Project of the Year’ at the Newcastle Division Engineers Australia 2024 Excellence Awards.
Recognising the groundbreaking Hybrid Power and Propulsion System for maritime vessels, developed by Ampcontrol in partnership with Steber International and The University of Newcastle.
The innovative Hybrid Power and Propulsion System is transforming the maritime sector providing a practical solution for decarbonising commercial and recreational vessels. The solution technically addresses significant challenges to reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency including, limited recharging options and negligible regeneration opportunities, which differentiates maritime vessels from land based electric vehicles.
Rod Henderson, Ampcontrol Managing Director & CEO, said, “Being awarded the Project of the Year award is a fantastic recognition of our team’s hard work and innovation. Our hybrid power system is a game-changer for the maritime industry, demonstrating that sustainable solutions are possible across all sectors. It is a testament to the value we can unlock through collaboration between industry and academia, as we have with Steber International and The University of Newcastle.”
The project has already seen success with a Steber International 43-foot boat equipped with the hybrid system operating along the NSW and Queensland coastlines. The vessel delivers a significant reduction in emissions, noise, and fuel consumption while maintaining the performance and range required for commercial operations.
“The electrification of marine vessels presents a vast opportunity for innovation. We’re incredibly proud of our hybrid power solution, which not only meets today’s challenges but also sets the stage for future advancements in sustainable maritime technology,” said Dr Steve Mitchell, Ampcontrol Engineering Manager – Electromotion.
Following this, Ampcontrol will represent the Newcastle division at the National Engineers Australia Excellence Awards on 21 November 2024 in Brisbane QLD, where it will compete for the national ‘Project of the Year’ title.
This award follows Ampcontrol, Steber International, and The University of Newcastle being awarded the Marine Industry Innovation of the Year award at the Australian Superyacht, Commercial Marine and Export Awards in Sanctuary Cove, QLD, in May, as well as the Boating Industry Association Ltd. (BIA) “Sustainability in the Boating Industry Award” during the Sydney International Boat Show in August 2024.
Currently moored in Newcastle Harbour, the 43ft hybrid boat will be showcased at the upcoming Hunter Innovation Festival, Thursday 17 October 2024.
