‘I’ve been told’: Mystery surrounds India line-up for Adelaide

KL Rahul has given no indication of where he will bat in the second Test as mystery surrounds the Indian top-order for Adelaide Oval.

The right-hander performed well in the series opener against Australia and is expected to remain in the XI, but it remains unclear where he will bat.

Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma are in line for a return after being unavailable in Perth, with both players set to boost an already in-form top six for the tourists.

Rahul is a flexible player who can fill in anywhere in the top six – similar to Sharma – but Gill is predominantly a No.3 who has also opened in the past at Test level.

Speaking to media on Wednesday afternoon, Rahul was quizzed about his spot in the order and produced a comical response that cracked up the journalists in the room.

“I’ve been told, but I was hoping not to share it today,” he said.

“You’ll have to wait for day one or maybe when the captain comes here tomorrow.”

Rahul was initially slated as a middle-order batter moving forward for India, but given the absentees for the first Test they were forced to make a change.

“I got told quite early – I was told to be ready and there might be a chance to open the batting and I had some time to prepare,” he said.

“Opening is something that I’ve done for a long time in my career, so I just had to go back and practice. I know how I need to get my runs and what processes I need.”

One piece of experience he won’t have on his side this weekend is facing the pink ball.

Rahul is yet to play a day-night Test in his career and had a limited opportunity last Sunday at Manuka Oval as part of the tour match against the Prime Minister’s XI.

But fresh off a win over the Aussies to kick off the summer, Rahul is confident his side can back it up and take a massive 2-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“This will be my first pink-ball Test, so I don’t have as much game experience,” he said.

“It’s just speaking to the guys who have played and trying to understand what things they found hard and if there were any changes that they made. It’s just a little different to the red ball … that has been a little bit of a challenge.

“It does give you a lot of confidence when you travel to Australia and win the first game – especially in Perth – but Perth is back in Perth and we move on.

“One thing that has been spoken about in the dressing room is to win sessions and not really worry about winning the whole game. We are trying to do that again.”
