Jannik Sinner has made a ‘very important’ change to his game in training ahead of the Australian Open

Jannik Sinner will be searching for his third Grand Slam title at this year’s Australian Open.

There have been few seasons better than Sinner’s 2024 ATP Tour campaign, which saw the young Italian reach world number one for the first time.

He then doubled his Grand Slam tally, as Sinner beat Taylor Fritz in the US Open final in September.

His 2024 successes didn’t end their however, as Sinner picked up three Masters 1000 titles, in Miami, Cincinnati and Shanghai.

Sinner then won the ATP Finals, and Davis Cup Finals to cap off a fantastic year, that saw him ascend to the top of the men’s game.

Always looking to improve, Sinner has now spoken about the changes to his game that he made during the off-season.

Jannik Sinner made ‘very important’ change to his game by ‘mixing up’ his tennis ahead of the Australian Open

In his pre-tournament press conference, world number one Sinner was asked whether he had made any changes to his game ahead of the Australian Open.

“No, on every shot slightly small, small changes,” he said.

“The small details at a certain point, they could make the difference, so.

“Of course, one part is very important for me, trying to mix up the game a little bit more, trying to move forward a little bit.

“That’s exactly what we were trying to do in the off-season.”

The Italian also mentioned that he made several changes that fans may not even notice.

“Service motion [is] slightly different,” said Sinner.

“Even if from outside you cannot see these changes, but as a player you realize it.

“That’s it, no? I think tennis is an all-around game, also the physical part is very important.

“The mental part is very important.

“We made some changes, but let’s see this year how it goes.”

Sinner was then asked how his life has changed over the past year, and how that has helped prepare him for the 2025 season.

“Yeah it was a massive change,” he said.

“Many, many things have changed, last year there were so many first times, not only first time winning Grand Slams, but then the year before, first time winning Davis Cup, and after, becoming world number one.

“There are not so many first times left, you know, in our sport, obviously there are still two different Grand Slams that I’m still missing, but I know exactly what to expect.”

Jannik Sinner’s potential route to the Australian Open title

The Italian has a pretty impressive record against all his opponents, providing the top-seeds advance until he reaches the final.

Sinner trails the head-to-head against German world number two Alexander Zverev, 2-4, despite winning their most recent contest in Cincinnati.

Perhaps their most relevant meeting came at the 2023 US Open when Zverev battled past Sinner in five sets to book his place in the quarter-finals.

It was a rematch of their last 16 tie from 2021, where Zverev came out on top in straight sets.

The pair are yet to face off in Melbourne, but could well do so for the first time later this month in the final.

Sinner has a long way to go before he can think of a final, however, and will first need to advance to the second round with a win over Nicolas Jarry on January 13.
