A golden year in Australian doubles tennis has continued overnight, with Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell claiming the 2024 US Open title, downing their opponents in straight sets.
Battling the German pairing of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz, the Aussies cruised through the first set before being truly tested with a tiebreak in the second, but were able to dig deep and come up with their first Grand Slam title as a duo.
The win makes the players the first all-Australian duo to claim the Flushing Meadows title since Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge in 1996, and marks Purcell’s second career doubles Grand Slam win, also taking out Wimbledon in 2022 alongside Matthew Ebden.
This Grand Slam title marks somewhat of a redemption story for the duo, who were defeated in the Wimbledon doubles finals months ago.
Speaking after the match, Purcell admitted that the loss in England was weighing on his mind during the final, but that they were able to channel it into motivation in order to lift the trophy.
“Wimbledon kind of helped us and probably made us focus a little bit more once it kind of slipped again to make sure it didn’t slip a third time,” Purcell said after the match.
“We don’t think of it as we’re doubles players,” Thompson added.
“We think we’re singles players, and doubles is just a bonus, and we get an extra practice trying to improve our singles, and then it all just comes together.”
As well as the triumph of claiming a Grand Slam title, the US Open win also delivered the Aussie pair a hefty payday, claiming a cash prize of US$750,000 (AU$1,125,000) to be split between them.
This brings Purcell’s career earnings to US$3,884,256 (AU$5,823,472), while Thompson has raked in a whopping US$6,865,023 (AU$10,292,388).
