Kids will make the calls in AFL games next year

Australia’s Seven Network is looking to reel in a younger generation of fans for the Australian Football League (AFL) by putting kids in a new broadcast role.

AFL Kids will launch for free on the broadcaster’s 7plus streamer in the new year, and will feature kids calling and commenting on the Sunday matches in order to better engage with young viewers, Seven revealed in its Upfront presentation last week.

The move follows a similar strategy to Nickelodeon and CBS’ NFL telecasts—which also include cartoon character cameos, on-field graphics and celebrity guests in addition to kid commentators. Nick’s feed of this year’s Super Bowl LVIII averaged between 1.2 million and 1.7 million viewers—the largest audience of any NFL game the company had broadcast to date. (The main CBS broadcast of the game reached 120.3 million viewers.)

By comparison, just over six million Australian viewers tuned in for the AFL Grand Final between the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans in September—making it the highest-viewed match in the AFL’s history. Around 655,000 of those viewers watched the game on the 7plus platform, which is up 44% from last year’s final.
