Archer Stakes winner Point King has been ruled out of the Melbourne Cup, dashing hopes of a record eighth Cup victory for owner Lloyd Williams.
Racing Victoria stewards announced on Saturday via social media platform X that Point King, who recently finished second in the Bart Cummings, will not feature in the third declarations scheduled for Monday morning.
In a statement, stewards confirmed: “Connections have advised that Point King will not be among the third acceptors for the Melbourne Cup 2024 on Monday.”
The withdrawal leaves jockey Jamie Kah without a confirmed ride and Williams without an entry in the iconic race. Jointly owned by Williams and James Packer, Point King had emerged as a serious contender, carrying a lightweight 50.5kg and attracting significant betting support for the Melbourne Cup.
