Letter to Australian Football Family

Dear Australian Football Family,

As I sit down to write this during my final week of employment with Football Australia, I am overwhelmed with a mixture of emotions. It’s hard to believe that my four-year journey with Australian football is coming to a close, but I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks for everything we have experienced together.

First and foremost, I want to express my deep appreciation for the incredible people I have had the privilege of meeting and connecting with along this journey. From the first time we met during COVID times, to the last match on home soil in June this year, each and every person has left an indelible mark on my life. The bond we have formed is beyond words, and I will forever cherish the memories we have created and celebrated together.

Australian football has been more than just a sport to me. It has truly been a family, a community, and a source of inspiration. Through the highs and lows, the victories and defeats, everyone has stood together, united by our love for the beautiful game and support for this incredible team. The camaraderie and support I have received from everyone involved have been invaluable, and I am eternally grateful.

I am grateful for all the moments we shared, the laughter, the tears, the debates and conversations, the countless lessons learned both on and off the field. Australian football has provided me with a platform to grow not only as a coach but also as a person. The values of teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship, passion, love, and joy that I have experienced will stay with me forever.

As I reflect on these four years, I realise that it is the people I have met along the way who have made this journey truly remarkable. The friendships forged, the bonds strengthened, and the support received have been the true highlights. Someone wise said: “It’s not about the journey or the destination, it’s all about the people you meet along the way.” I could not agree more.

So, to the Australian Football Family, everyone associated with it, and the Australian public who had joined us, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for believing in me, for inspiring me, for letting me inspire you to always get one day better. Thank you for the memories, the wisdom, and the experiences that will shape me for years to come.

Although my time with Australian football, as a head coach for The Matildas, is coming to an end, the impact it has had on my life will be everlasting. I know that the friendships I have made will remain strong, even as our paths diverge.

Once again, thank you, Australia Football Family, for everything. It has been an honour and a privilege to be a part of this team, this sport and this nation.

With heartfelt gratitude,
