Marc Leishman has withdrawn from LIV Golf UK due to appendicitis, the former six-time PGA Tour winner revealed on social media.
Leishman withdrew from the tournament at JCB Resort in the Midlands of England due to illness before the second round. Later, his Ripper GC captain, Cameron Smith, confirmed on the broadcast that Leishman had suffered from appendicitis.
Leishman later posted from the hospital, sat up in bed with the thumbs up:
“Disappointed to have to WD this week but health always comes first. I came to England with an appendix and will leave without it! Appendicitis is no joke.”
Due to LIV Golf’s team format, Ripper GC called up fellow Australian, Wade Ormsby. The 44-year-old Asian Tour and DP World Tour veteran replaced Leishman for Saturday and will tee up Sunday when all four scores count for the teams event.
It was unclear when the 40-year-old Leishman will return for LIV, but the league’s next event is at Greenbrier on the August 16. Appendicitis can take a person anywhere from one week to four to recover, depending on the type of surgery.
The news seemed to fire up Smith, who birdied three of his first four holes en route to a five-under-par 66. At 10-under through two rounds, the 2022 Open champion was tied in second with local English hope Tyrrell Hatton and both trailed American leader Andy Ogletree at 12-under.
