United Cup: Great Britain claims lead after Boulter triumphs

Katie Boulter breaks Olivia Gadecki’s serve to put an exclamation mark on an impressive victory in the opening singles rubber.

Boulter was victorious 6-2, 6-1 over Gadecki to give Great Britain a 1-0 lead over Australia.

The straight-sets result put Great Britain into the quarterfinals, but Australia can still advance if it wins the second singles match and the mixed doubles rubber.

Boulter will now watch on as her partner, Australian men’s number one Alex de Minaur, faces her British teammate Billy Harris.

She won the first set comfortably, now Great Britain’s Katie Boulter has two service breaks early in the second against Australia’s Olivia Gadecki.

Boulter leads 3-0 in the second set on Ken Rosewall Arena.

Great Britain is edging closer to going 1-0 up in its group tie against Australia at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.

Highlighted by securing a double break, Katie Boulter dominated the first set of the opening singles rubber against Olivia Gadecki, winning 6-2.

Boulter landed 75 per cent of her first serves and posted three aces.

Brisbane International: Kyrgios, Djokovic depart doubles draw

The doubles run of Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic has come to an end in Brisbane at the hands of top seeds Nikola Mektić and Michael Venus.

Kyrgios and Djokovic sent the contest against into a match tie-breaker after winning the second set 6-3.

But the doubles experience of Mektić and Venus shone through when it mattered most, with the duo clinching the tie-break 10-8.

They won the first set 6-2.

The tournament isn’t over for Djokovic, however, as he remains in the hunt for the singles title.

He faces French veteran Gaël Monfils in the last 16.

United Cup: Poland advances to quarterfinals

Poland has moved through to the knockout stage of the United Cup with a 2-1 triumph over Czechia.

Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz teamed up to defeat Karolina Muchova and Tomas Machac in the deciding mixed doubles rubber, 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.

The singles matches had earlier between shared between Poland and Czechia.

Machac got past Hurkacz 7-5,3-6, 6-4 in the men’s rubber, but Swiatek levelled for Poland with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Muchova.

Brisbane International: Kyrgios, Djokovic force match tie-breaker

Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic have pushed their men’s doubles match against Nikola Mektić and Michael Venus in a deciding match tie-break.

Kyrgios held serve to clinch a second-set scoreline of 6-3.

After losing the first set, Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic are finding their groove in their round-of-16 men’s doubles match.

Kyrgios and Djokovic snatched a service break in the fourth game of the second set against top seed Nikola Mektić and Michael Venus.

They consolidated the break with a service hold to lead 4-1.

Mektić and Michael Venus earlier won the first set 6-2.

United Cup: Kazakhstan defeats Germany to book semis spot

Kazakhstan has moved through to the United Cup semifinals after Alexander Shevchenko defeated Germany’s Daniel Masur in the men’s singles rubber.

Shevchenko beat Masur — who replaced the injured Alexander Zverev — 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-2.

Elena Rybakina won the earlier women’s singles match, defeating Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-1.

The Kazakhs have already wrapped up the tie ahead of the mixed doubles.

Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic will need to force a third set if they are any hope of keeping their doubles dream alive in Brisbane.

Top seeds Nikola Mektić and Michael Venus secured a double break in the first set, which they won 6-2 in 26 minutes.

Across the ditch, former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin’s singles campaign is over.

Kenin, who lifted the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup in 2020, won the first set but 50th-ranked Clara Tauson rebounded to win 4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/3) in their round-of-16 fixture.

It’s 1-1 in the men’s doubles clash between Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic, and Nikola Mektić and Michael Venus.

The second game featured a remarkable rally that included two between-the-legs shots from Kyrgios and a narrowly avoided collision of racquets when Mektić and Venus both went for an overhead smash.

Having entertained the Pat Rafter Arena crowd in their first outing, Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic are back for some more doubles action.

This morning, Tomas Machac defeated Hubert Hurkacz to give Czechia a 1-0 lead over Poland.

Then Iga Swiatek evened the ledger by downing Karolina Muchova to make it 1-1 in the early afternoon.

Now the two nations are locked in a tense mixed doubles match to see who progresses to the quarterfinals.

Poland currently has the lead in the opening set 4-2.

It was a valiant effort from Australian wildcard Aleksandar Vukic, but world number 10 Grigor Dimitrov showed his class to register a straight-sets win in their round-of-16 match.

The Bulgarian, who won the Brisbane men’s title last year, defeated Vukic 6-2, 7-6 (7/5).

Dimitrov will face either Australian eighth seed Jordan Thompson or Alex Michelsen of the US in the quarterfinals.

Canberra International: Hule departs in the capital

Australia’s Petra Hule has lost her round-of-16 match against Serbian Nina Stojanović.

Stojanović posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

As we mentioned earlier, Aussie Taylah Preston defeated sixth seed Marina Stakusic in three sets to reach the quarterfinals.

Preston will play Alexandra Eala, who defeated Arianne Hartono 6-3, 6-3.

United Cup: Masur outmuscles Shevchenko to give Germany a lift

Germany’s Daniel Masur claimed the opening set 7-6(7-5) against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko in a tense tie-break under the blazing sun in Perth.

Masur, who was a last-minute replacement for Alexander Zverev, winning the first stanza keeps Germany in the fight in the quarterfinals, after Elena Rybakina defeated Laura Siegemund to put Kazakhstan 1-0 up  earlier in the day.
