This is a Test match fascinatingly poised at tea on the opening day. By the end of Boxing Day there are so many potential scenarios. Should Australia keep wickets lost to a minimum, they’ll undoubtedly have “won” the day, proving too that there score is around the 250-runs mark.
It’s like this match has been played in two distinct phases. Test debutant Sam Konstas set the MCG alight with a blazing run-a-ball half-century, highlighted by sheer flamboyance with the bat including taking a bold and fearless approach to one of the world’s best bowlers Bumrah. Naturally his quick scoring (out for 60) pushed up Australia’s scoring rate.
But once wonder boy Konstas was gone, the run rate completely nose-dived. Usman Khawaja, who’d played a composed and patient innings, was out caught after a popping up a chance. Talk about wasting your wicket. It further disrupted Australia’s first innings progression.
The day will also be remembered for a controversial incident – a physical clash between Kohli and Konstas that has everyone talking. Time will tell whether the star Indian faces any sort of sanction over the incident, or whether he’ll simply get a warning.
