De Minaur needs a strong United Cup performance to boost his chances of moving up into the ATP top eight, which would give him a gentler draw at the Australian Open.
He is looking to pass Russia’s Andrey Rublev, who is just a handful of points ahead of the Sydneysider, but is the No.1 seed at the Hong Kong Open beginning in a few days’ time.
With both men defending good points – Rublev winning the most recent Hong Kong event, and de Minaur making the semi-finals of the 2024 United Cup – it’ll be a race to see who can repeat or improve on 12 months ago.
Tonight’s tie will finish with mixed doubles, with Ellen Perez and Matt Ebden facing Podoroska and Etcheverry.
Australia’s second and final group stage tie will be on January 1, against de Minaur’s fiance Katie Boulter’s Great Britain.
