Live: Steve Smith’s lean patch continues as Bumrah’s double-strike lifts India

Live updates: Australia vs India

44th over – Siraj continues

Head clips away for a single.

In short, yep

There is a lot of talk about our aging test team with players like Marnus and smith. Do you think that’s any reason to be concerned

– Bailey

For a longer answer, check out this from Dean.

43rd over – Rana replaces Bumrah

Interesting. Bumrah was on one for me.

Marnus defends solidly.

FOUR! A bit too straight and Marnus clips off his pads through midwicket. Nicely played.

FOUR MORE! Again, even more leg side and he plays it even squarer, and even faster as the ball flies to the boundary.

Not a great start for Rana.

Overadjustment from Rana, Marnus leaves outside off.

Again, well outside off, a masticating Marnus lets it go.

Marnus looks to drive but can’t time it, the ball slightly fuller and catching Marnus’ inside edge.

I think the heat is very much on…

Steve Smith is averaging 23.2 this calendar year. One score of 50+ (91*), and his last six innings have seen scores of 0, 11, 9, 0, 17 and 2.

When does the heat come for him? Or does he get the David Warner treatment of picking when he retires?

– Tom

The discussion had been focused on Marnus.

But Smith’s average is starting to trend down just as dramatically.

The day of reckoning is coming.

42nd over – Siraj continues

BEATEN! What a seed from Siraj, a miracle that Head missed getting an edge on it. A beautiful ball that just leaves the left hander.

Head leaves the next one.

BEATEN! Oh my what a ball, Head was a mile away from getting anything on it but that’s nipped away off the seam. A beauty.

BEATEN! Big swing and a big miss from Head, who tries to cut and throws the whole kitchen at it along with the sink. Siraj holds his head in his hands, pinching his nose.

Head defends solidly to the next one. This is good stuff from this pairing.

Head defends the last.

41st over – Bumrah comes in to Travis Head

The home town boy is walking out to face the music that Bumrah is playing, accompanied by a chorus of cheers and applause.

Bumrah, around the wicket, bowls outside off and Head leaves it.

BEATEN! Oh my what a good ball. Head puts his bat down, Bumrah gets the ball to dance away off the seam and bears the outside edge.

FOUR! Head punches that one through the covers! A great shot with his trademark flashing blade. Just pitched a fraction up and Head lapped it up.

Off the outside edge to point, there’s no run there.

Too leg side, Head swishes the bat to deep backward square and takes a single.

SMITH IS OUT!

(Getty Images)

Oh no Steven Peter Devereux, what have you done?

Bumrah sends a loosener down the leg side, Smith dangles his bat towards it and gets a feather on it.

A really cheap wicket.

Smith knows he’s touched it and walks off with his head down.

He goes for 2 off 11 balls and Bumrah has another wicket with the first ball of an over in this series.

41st over – Bumrah comes in again

40th over – Siraj comes in

Marnus defends one and then clips away through midwicket.

EDGED! Great ball, Smith squared up, the ball hitting just below the shoulder of the bat and squirting away through the gully region. he runs a single and gets off strike which may be no bad thing – that was a nasty ball.

Marnus defends.

Siraj comes in and then decides not to bowl the ball. Marnus holds his pose anyway.

Marnus defends another one when Siraj does bowl the ball.

DRIVEN! That’s a lovely shot to wide long on. Another perfect drive from Marnus. That’s a great sign that he’s seeing the ball well, when he’s driving like this. He runs four and even wants a five! Smith can’t quite keep up with him though.

Good signs for McSweeney

I know he would’ve wanted more, but surviving a difficult night session, getting 39 runs and soaking up over 100 balls is a good sign for McSweeney’s opening prospects

– Sean

I’d still rather he batted in the middle order, where he usually plays to be honest.

But it was good for him to survive that spell last night and can build on that.

39th over – Bumrah carries on

Smith defends as Bumrah angles in and targets the stumps.

Bumrah is doing well here, with a good field as well. A short midwicket is stopping Smith from getting any runs through that area. Although Bumrah oversteps again so Australia gets one anyway.

An extravagant leave from Smith, up on one leg and spinning balletically as the ball passes outside off.

Two slips and a gully, Smith defends with the bat close to his pad. Bumrah again getting close to the stumps with his deliveries.

Another solid defence from Smith on a fourth-stump line. He’ll just need to be careful playing at balls that he doesn’t need to, Smith.

Smith gets a bit tangled up as a ball rears up a bit at him but he survives the over, no runs off the bat from it.

38th over – Siraj continues

Nice shot from Marnus, but straight to the fielder. That’s another no ball. There has been a plague of them in this series.

That’s 10 no balls in the Test so far. There were 30 in Perth in total.

Marnus defends solidly.

Oh that’s an incredibly tight leave, Siraj getting the ball to angle back in dramatically to miss the off stump by not very much.

Solid defence from Marnus.

EDGED! Off a downward-angled bat to third slip as Siraj steams in again.

It’s another brilliant battle going on out there at the moment.

He could be

Simon do you think Marnus is slowly finding with his current innings currently

– Bailey

I’d hate to jinx him, but he seems to be.

That testing period last night, with the Indians chirping at him and the ball hooping would have done him the world of good.

37th over – Bumrah has five more

Bumrah walks in, Smith clips off his pads and gets a single straight away. Nicely played, good touch there from Smith first up.

Marnus makes Bumrah wait, then he comes in and bowls outside off, Marnus leaves it alone.

Solid defence.

Now a nice clip, a lovely shot from Marnus through wide mid on, all the way to the rope where it’s kept in play. They run three. Good timing. No, great timing from Marnus. He looks in decent shape this morning after that tough examination last night.

Smith defends the last.

EDGED! OUT! BUMRAH HAS McSWEENEY!

(Getty Images)

The best ball he’s bowled this innings.

A lovely ball that swung in a touch, finds the outside edge off a perfect length and then carries neatly to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.

McSweeney adds just a single to his overnight score, he’s out for 39.

37th over – Bumrah comes in again

36th over – Siraj continues

Marnus looks to clip the ball into the leg side, but there is no run.

Another neat clip, that one goes straight to short midwicket.

Yorker, swinging in, Marnus gets the bat down nicely and plays the ball to cover. It’s a no ball, so we’ll have it again.

Outside off, left alone.

BIG APPEAL! SIRAJ LOVES IT! Richard Illingworth says no! Was there an inside edge? I think there might have been. Siraj didn’t even turn around until he passed the batter, very Stuart Broad. But yes, a big, thick inside edge that barely shows up on snicko… Let’s hope that doesn’t cause an issue.

(Getty Images)

Marnus leaves the last to end the over.

35th over – Bumrah comes jerkily in

Outside off, left alone.

Solid defence now as the ball angles into McSweeney.

Over the stumps, McSweeney continues his patient approach to leaving the ball.

Good ball, well defended. That one swung in a bit, angling towards the stumps.

Left outside off, another good, patient leave.

Bit of an awkward one, the ball hitting the pad via the bat as he tries to clip the ball through the leg side. Just doesn’t time it.

Speaking of which…

As a counterpoint to Ruddy: Great batting conditions, I think Marnus and McSweeney will make a meal of it if they can get through the Great Wall of Bumrah!
