Maxwell’s 19-ball display leaves Pakistan helpless

Maxwell’s 19-ball display leaves Pakistan helpless

Glenn Maxwell was back to his old ways during Australia’s first T20 International match against Pakistan at the Gabba, as the hosts claimed a 29-run victory on Thursday night.

Despite being reduced to just seven overs due to inclement weather, Australia piled on a whopping 4-93, before ripping Pakistan apart with ball in hand.

But it was Maxwell’s 43 off just 19 balls, headlined by eight boundaries, that set up Australia for success.

Following Maxwell’s stellar knock, it was Marcus Stoinis who finished off the job in style.

He belted 21 off seven balls to finish off the reduced innings, with Australia averaging 13.2 runs an over in a stellar outing.

But the magic didn’t end there.

With ball in hand and off just 3.2 overs, Pakistan were 6-24 and crumbling by the minute, with no choice but the swing the bat to make up the near-impossible total.

Haseebullah’s partnership with Abbas Afridi threatened as the pair smacked 18 off the fifth over.

It was short-lived when Haseebullah (12 off 7) was caught at deep mid-wicket by Tim David.

Pakistan required an impossible 41 runs off the final over, which was bowled by Australian spinner Adam Zampa.

The visitors finished on 9-64 after Shaheen Afridi was stumped by Josh Inglis off Zampa’s ball before Naseem Shah was bowled in the very next ball.

And there was another star with the ball in hand, who left the Gabba smiling ear to ear after a clean return.

Nathan Ellis returned from his hamstring troubles to take 3-9 off just two overs.

“I’m absolutely frothing to be back,” Ellis told Fox post-match.

“I love the boys and I love being a part of this team. I’m hoping to string a few together now and stay off the hammy curl machine.”

Fellow bowler Xavier Bartlett took 3-13, while Zampa finished with 2-11.

Maxwell was named man of the match.

Their next T20 will see Australia and Pakistan travel down to Sydney on Saturday night, to face off at the SCG from 7pm (AEDT).
