Maxwell’s huge ‘all-time’ call on unplayable Bumrah

Maxwell’s huge ‘all-time’ call on unplayable Bumrah

Glenn Maxwell has heaped enormous praise on Jasprit Bumrah, claiming the Indian quick could become “the best fast bowler of all-time” as his career progresses.

Bumrah tore through the Australian batting lineup in the first Test of the series, picking up match figures of 8-72 in a dominant victory for the visitors in Perth.

The dangerous right-arm seamer, who captained India in the opening game against the Aussies, has already taken 181 wickets at an average of 20.06 from 41 games.

While it’s extremely unlikely he gets near the likes of Glenn McGrath or James Anderson in terms of wickets taken at Test level, the 30-year-old’s average and ability to adapt to all conditions across the globe has been on display for many years now.

Speaking on The Grade Cricketer podcast, Maxwell was glowing in his endorsement of Bumrah and described the Indian juggernaut as the “complete package”.

“Bumrah is going to go down as potentially the best fast bowler of all time,” he said.

“Maybe not with the amount of wickets he takes in every format – but for the guys that have played against him, it’s just so difficult.

“He’s just got such a unique action and unique ability.. He can get it to move, rush you, beat you on the inside or outside edge. He’s got a quick sniff and a good slower ball.

“He seems like a complete package.”

Bumrah wasn’t the only player who turned heads at Optus Stadium, with young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal producing a match-winning century in his first game Down Under.

The 21-year-old has announced himself as one of the most exciting young players in world cricket and according to Maxwell, he could break plenty of records in his career.

“Having played against him for the last few years when he came into the IPL as a teenager, he just started smacking them around,” the Aussie star said.

“I think it was the Test series against England where he just pummeled them and I remember watching him bat and going ‘he has got an answer for everything’. He has got different gears, he has got a great ability to go through the tempos of the game.

“He played a lot of shots that will be on highlights packages [against Australia], but the stuff he did in between and the balls he left and the balls he got behind … he doesn’t seem to have many weaknesses.

“He’s a guy that is probably gonna get more than 40 Test hundreds and rewrite some records. It’s gonna be scary if Australia can’t find a way to stop him.”
