MCG lock in ‘pinnacle’ 150-year Test for 2027

MCG lock in ‘pinnacle’ 150-year Test for 2027

The Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney Cricket Ground have both locked in their respective blockbuster Test matches for the next seven years.

The MCG will keep their traditional Boxing Day Test until at least 2031, while the SCG will do the same with the New Year’s Day Test.

And in exciting news for the MCG, they will also host a special one-off Test in March 2027 between Australia and England to celebrate 150 years of Test cricket.

On top of the exciting news for the MCG and SCG, further information has been released on the rest of the country’s future in Test cricket.

Adelaide Oval will host the Christmas Test for the next seven summers as either a day or day-night format. It means the 2025-2026 Ashes match will very likely be a red ball match.

Perth’s Test will remain at Optus Oval for the next three years. It means the 2025-2026 Ashes will begin at a new venue, other than the Gabba, for the first time in over 40 years.

Further, the Gabba has been locked in for another Test in the summer of 2025-2026, despite the planning and construction for the 2032 Brisbane Games underway.

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley was “delighted” to confirm the news on Sunday.

“We are delighted to confirm long-term hosting rights which provide certainty around the locations of some fantastic cricket over the next seven years,” Hockley said.

“We are enormously grateful for the strong support of state and territory Governments and venue operators who will help us to deliver brilliant experiences across the country and maximise economic impact from these major events.”

Meantime, the March 2027 Test between Australia and England will not count as part of the Ashes series.

Instead, it will pay homage to the 1977 Centenary Test, which was held at the MCG between March 12-17 in 1977.

“The 150th anniversary Test match at the MCG in March 2027 will be a wonderful celebration of the pinnacle format of the game at one of the world’s great sporting arenas,” Hockley said

“We can’t wait to host England on that occasion.”
