Australian T20 captain, Mitchell Marsh, has declared himself fit and ready for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

The all-rounder had injured his hamstring during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and hasn’t played since early April when he represented the Delhi Capitals (DC) against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last month.

Marsh To Play As A Batter For Now

Marsh, 32, participated in a training session in Trinidad and is set to face Oman in Australia’s opener in Barbados on June 5.

He shared his progress, saying, “It’s been progressively slow, but I’m finally getting there now and looking forward to getting stuck into the tournament.”

Initially, Marsh thought the injury would heal in three weeks, but tendon injuries often require more time.

“Once I was ruled out of the IPL, we got things right. And I feel fortunate to have had that extra time, a little time at home to recharge,” he continued.

While Marsh will likely play in Australia’s warm-up match against Namibia on Tuesday, he will only be batting. His return to bowling will take a bit longer.

“Probably still a while off. I hope to start bowling shortly. Get through these practice games as a batter, and then we’ll step it up. But it’s one of the benefits of being captain now that I don’t have to bowl myself,” Marsh explained.

Australia’s squad is still coming together, with some players yet to arrive from the IPL. Travis Head, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, who played in the IPL final, will rest in Australia before joining the team in the Caribbean.

Reserves Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short are also on their way.
