THE Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association has moved its training and education for young players to the nationally recognised Aussie Hoops program.
Endorsed by Basketball Australia, Aussie Hoops is tailored for children aged five to 10. It emphasises fundamental skills, teamwork – and fun.
It provides a structured approach to learning and playing the game with a focus on participation and enjoyment, and is regarded as an excellent foundation for aspiring players.
Association president Tenielle Brown said the change was a significant move, with Aussie Hoops replacing the association’s own beginners program.
“This change is aimed at enhancing the experience for young athletes and fostering the growth of basketball within our community,” Ms Brown said.
“This transition reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality basketball education.
“The Aussie Hoops program aligns perfectly with our objectives and offers participants a pathway to engage with the broader Australian basketball landscape, from grassroots to elite levels.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our youth to develop their skills and love for basketball.”
Ms Brown said 30 young players were already involved in the program, which began last week, but more were welcome to register and take part.
“We’re not going to turn anyone away,” she said.
Ms Brown described Aussie Hoops as “like Auskick for basketball”, where up-and-coming players go through drills and then participate in game situations.
Those completing the sessions would graduate to the association’s Under 8 competition, she said, adding that several young local basketballers were helping out as volunteers in the program.
Ms Brown said the association was hoping to have as many as 50 youngsters involved for the Term 1 program next year.
The Aussie Hoops program is taking place at the MARC (Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Centre) Stadium from 4pm to 5pm each Wednesday and is being delivered over nine sessions until mid-December.
