Sam Konstas could be in line for a hefty pay rise if he plays in the Test series against Sri Lanka as one of the teenager’s mentors shines a new light on his mindset.
The 19-year-old took the cricket world by storm against India, scoring a half-century in his Boxing Day debut and backing it up with some valuable contributions in Sydney.
The right-handed opener is now in line to travel overseas for a two-game series against Sri Lanka, which would see him elevated to a central Cricket Australia contract.

As a result, the deal for Konstas would be valued at over $345,000 and according to reports, would also include back pay to cover the difference to his state deal.
It comes after Konstas divided opinion during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for his antics and batting style, which led to run-ins with Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.
While some past players have warned Konstas to tone down his brash approach, Stuart Clark recalled an exchange that explains his outlook.
Speaking on ABC Radio, the former Aussie bowler – who shares a bond with Konstas due to their time together at Sutherland – revealed the teenager was simply having fun.
“I threw a bottle at him because he was too busy swanning about,” Clark said.
“I went up to him and I basically said, what are you doing? He said ‘I don’t really know’.
“I looked into his eyes and he’s so caught up in the atmosphere of what he’s doing that I think he’s just on autopilot and he’s loving every single minute of it.
“We talked about this a bit in Melbourne, I think he’ll look back on this in ten years time and go, ‘oh wow, that’s a bit interesting’. He’s loving every minute of it.
“Pulled from pillar to post. Everyone was screaming for him. The media were trying to get a hold of him. I think he’s just caught in the moment of how good Test cricket is.
“He’s just on the wave at the moment and the game was in fast forward.”
Konstas is expected to be named in the extended Test squad to play Sri Lanka, with the series opener kicking off on January 29 in Galle.
