New-look Aussie T20 squad locked in as shuffle opens door to debut skipper

Australia will have a new T20 captain for next month’s home series against Pakistan as the Test stars put their feet up ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Mitch Marsh’s replacement has not been named but cricket.com.au declared that Josh Inglis, Adam Zampa and Matt Short are all in the mix to take the reins in Marsh’s absence.

Glenn Maxwell is the most experienced member of the 13-player squad for the three-match series in Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart but none of them have ever captained Australia before.

The squad has yet to be named for the blockbuster five-Test series against India has yet to be named but none of the Test regulars feature in the T20 group announced on Monday.

The absence of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in particular paths the way for the return of a trio of white-ball specialist who were hampered by injury on the September tour of the UK.

Quicks Xavier Bartlett, Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis have all been named to make their international returns from injury despite Johnson – who featured for South Australia in the One-Day Cup against Queensland last week – being the only one to play any domestic cricket so far this season.

“It is particularly encouraging to have Xavier, Spencer and Nathan back in the national setup,” said selection chief George Bailey.

“It’s another opportunity for them to continue to show their ability on the international stage, as they have done in the past.”

With the bat, and some times the ball, no Travis Head, Mitch Marsh or Cameron Green from Australia’s recent T20I squads will give further opportunity to the likes of Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cooper Connolly and Aaron Hardie.

Meanwhile white ball stars Zampa, Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David have all been named.

The final game of the T20I series against Pakistan will be played at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval on November 18 and the first Test against India begins at Perth Stadium on November 22 meaning it is too short a turnaround for the Test players – many of whom were named earlier this month to play the three-match ODI series against Pakistan which precedes the T20Is.

It is also too tight of a timeframe for Australian coach Andrew McDonald who will handover duties to assistant Andre Borovec as he and other assistants Michael di Venuto and Dan Vettori head to Perth to turn their attention to the Test summer.

Borovec also filled-in for the five-match T20I series that was played against India immediately after Australia’s triumph at last year’s ODI World Cup.

Former Australia batter Brad Hodge – who was part of the coaching group for this year’s T20 World Cup – and former New Zealand pace bowler Hamish Bennett will assist Borovec.
