Nick Kyrgios injury: Tennis star’s Australian Open return in doubt | Sporting News Australia

Nick Kyrgios’ return to the Australian Open is in jeopardy, after the controversial tennis star picked up yet another injury in the lead up to the tournament.

The Australian was set to make his return to Melbourne Park for the first time since 2022, but after playing at the Brisbane International, he announced that he is doubtful to compete in the year’s first Grand Slam.

After missing over 18 months due to injury, 2025 was billed as the comeback year for Kyrgios, but barely a week in to the new year he could find himself back at square one.

Nick Kyrgios in doubt for Australian Open with abdominal injury

It looks as though tennis fans will need to wait on Nick Kyrgios’ Australian Open return, with the former World No. 13 likely to miss the Grand Slam with an abdominal injury.

Posting on Instagram, Kyrgios said that he had suffered a grade one abdominal strain, one which would more than likely see him miss the Australian Open.

“Unfortunately won’t be able to play my good friend [Novak Djokovic] this Thursday on the 9th as I’ve had an ultrasound on my abdominal and have a grade 1 strain,” Kyrgios wrote.

“Will be resting and doing everything I can to be ok by the Aus Open.”

With four days until the official start of the Australian Open, Kyrgios will be racing the clock to be fit and ready to play, especially considering the lingering wrist injury he has been dealing with, which caused him to miss all of 2024.

“I think I was really excited for the Oz Open, but after today, if I’m able to play, I’m able to play,” he said in the lead up.

“I think I almost need a miracle, and I need, like, the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a Grand Slam for sure.

“Today, if this was a Grand Slam, we may still be out on court, and I don’t know how I’d pull up the next day or the day after. Yeah, that’s kind of the reality setting in.”

Kyrgios’ last appearance at the Australian Open came in 2022, when he was beaten in the second round by Daniil Medvedev.
