Jake Fraser-McGurk has failed to break down the door of selectors as Steve Smith also finds himself without a seat to the Carribean as Australia revealed its Twenty20 World Cup squad.
It comes as Mitch Marsh was officially confirmed as captain for the tournament after several players have juggled the role post-Aaron Finch’s retirement.
Fellow WA products Cam Green, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, Tim David and Ashton Agar will also be part of the squad as Australia look to unify all three major men’s ICC trophies having won both the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup this cycle.
Fraser-McGurk has been in stunning form which saw him make his international debut earlier this year in the ODI series against the West Indies and is currently striking at 233.33 in the Indian Premier League.
However, with Australia backing veteran David Warner and Travis Head to open and favouring all-rounders through the middle there was no room to slide in a specialist batter.
Smith will also miss out having been unable to lock down a role in the T20 setup despite trying his hand at opening.
Smith’s axing marks the first time he has not been picked for an Australia squad on form in more than a decade.
He last missed a World Cup in any format in 2012.
Marsh is expected to bat at No.3 with selectors holding no concerns over a hamstring injury that brought a premature end to his IPL season.
“It’s been an immense privilege to play for my country and now an even greater honour to lead the squad to a World Cup,” Marsh said.
“We have had some strong success in recent times and I am hopeful that will continue in what looks like a wide-open tournament.”
Selection chief George Bailey listed Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett as unfortunate omissions while suggesting Fraser-McGurk “continues to impress and is developing rapidly”.
“Being constrained to a squad of 15 for World Cups is always a challenge given the different scenarios and options we’d like to cover,” Bailey continued.
“We will continue monitoring several players who have missed out on this preliminary squad and note that if we wish to change this squad, we have the option to do so over the coming weeks in accordance with ICC regulations.”
Agar’s selection may also surprise some having recently turned down a state contract and been beset by injuries but selectors said the expectation of low and slow wickets in the Caribbean meant a second specialist spinner was a necessity.
“It’s great to have Ashton Agar back into the squad following a spate of unfortunate and untimely injuries,” said Bailey.
“We believe Ashton can play a critical role in this tournament along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green and Mitch Marsh in complementing our front-line attack options.”
Officials have until May 25 to alter their squad without ICC approval with the squad expected to arrive in the Caribbean in late May.
