MOLLIE O’CALLAGHAN WINS GOLD!

O’Callaghan finished with a flourish to win in an Olympic record of 1:53.27.

Ariarne Titmus was second in 1:53.81.

Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong was third in 1:54.55.

O’Callaghan was fifth after 100m but timed her finish to perfection.

It is the first time Australia has finished 1-2 in an Olympic swimming final since Ian Thorpe beat home Grant Hackett in the men’s 400m freestyle at the 2004 Athens Games.

O’Callaghan reversed the result from the Australian selection trials, when Titmus edged out her training partner in a world-record time.

Both swimmers are coached by Dean Boxall in Brisbane and their race in Paris was eagerly anticipated.

It is O’Callaghan’s first individual Olympic gold medal.

She was a member of the Australian quartet that triumphed in the women’s 4x100m freestyle final on the opening night of swimming.

Titmus adds the silver to the gold she won in the 400m freestyle on the same night.

She was the gold medallist in the 200m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics.
