‘One of the most incredible moments’: Cate Campbell lauds Aussie duo’s classy act after Paris heartbreak

An emotional Cate Campbell has fallen short in a bid to qualify for a fifth Olympic Games, bowing out of contention after finishing seventh in the 50m freestyle final.

After missing the 100m freestyle final by one-hundredth of a second, Campbell had put the heartbreak behind her to win her heat then qualify as the sixth-fastest for the 50m final in Brisbane on Saturday.

Campbell needed a top-two finish in the final to guarantee a spot for Paris, but came seventh in 24.76 seconds.

Shayna Jack won the final in 23.99 seconds, with Meg Harris finishing second in 24.26 to book her first individual swim at the Olympics.

A teary Campbell hugged fellow swimmers both in and out of the pool post-race before addressing the media.

“The fact there were two girls who qualified for an Olympic Games, which is no mean feat, one of them for her first individual spot in Meg Harris — that they put their celebrations on hold and came over is one of the most incredible moments and something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life,” Campbell said.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. I would have loved to have that fairytale ending more than anything else.

“But I can now sit back and reflect on a wonderful career. I can leave the sport with my head held really high. I came back to try do something no one’s done before and my god, I gave it a really good crack.”

Elsewhere, Cody Simpson also fell short in his bid to book a ticket to Paris on the final day of the Australian Olympic swimming trials.

Simpson had qualified fifth for the 100m butterfly final after winning his heat with a time of 51.78.

But Simpson finished fifth in the final with a time of 51.79, with Matt Temple and Ben Armbruster finishing first and second.

Other events on Saturday night include the men’s and women’s 400m individual medley and the women’s 1500m freestyle.

Australia will announce its team for the Paris Olympics after the final event.

AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC SWIM TRIALS

To qualify for the Olympic team, a swimmer must finish in the top two of the A final of their event, and meet Swimming Australia’s qualifying time (which is tougher than the global standard).

A swimmer only needs to qualify in one event to make the team, and can then attempt other events as well.

The meet is being held at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre and can be watched on Nine and 9Now, with the finals from 7:30pm AEST each night.

The final team will be announced on Saturday night.
