Australia’s Hannah Green finished the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s golf event in tied-fourth place after carding a three-under-par 69 in the final round at Le Golf National on Saturday.
The Australian golfer, who scored six-under 282, finished just one stroke short of a medal playoff behind the People’s Republic of China’s Lin Xiyu, who also carded a three-under in the final round and sealed a bronze.
New Zealand’s Lydia Ko won the gold medal with a 10-under 282, two strokes ahead of Germany’s Esther Henseleit.
Australia are yet to win a medal in golf – in both the men’s and women’s events.
Nevertheless, Hannah Green’s fourth was the best finish by an Australian in golf at the Olympics, eclipsing her own and Marcus Fraser’s T5 finishes previously.
However, the close finish left the 27-year-old from Perth, who tied with three other golfers, with mixed feelings.
On how she is feeling.
Hannah Green: “(Angry), I guess, is the first word that comes to mind. Maybe giving myself five minutes to think about it, coming fourth after such a bad start to the Games on Wednesday, I have to be pretty proud of myself.
“I gave myself some good opportunities coming down the stretch (back nine holes), but (I’m) a bit annoyed that the putt on (hole) 17 didn’t go in.
“Overall I’m super proud of myself. My team and I did well today. So all in all, to be in contention at a Games, I’m super happy.”
On whether she was aware she was in the hunt for a medal.
Hannah Green: “You always expect other people to play well, and I knew it was going to be difficult. It was nice that I was in the third or fourth group from the back, so I felt like I had less pressure on myself than perhaps the other girls coming in.
“I was surprised. The time I saw (I was in third position) was coming off nine and then I hit into the water. That’s when I honestly felt I was out of it completely.
“It is a difficult stretch the last nine holes, and obviously I played them well yesterday. I just wanted to make sure that I focused on that and gave myself opportunities, which I certainly did. So I’m proud of that.”
On the atmosphere at the course.
Hannah Green: “These are probably the biggest crowds I’ve ever played in front of. When I won the 2019 Women’s PGA Championship in Minnesota it was like super rainy and miserable weather, so I didn’t have that many people following.”
On whether she will compete at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
“I definitely will still be playing golf. Touch wood I don’t get injured or anything like that. But when I left Tokyo (2020) I was thinking about Paris (2024) just because I thought it was going to be such a great venue. And it has been. So LA will definitely be on my radar.
On her main takeaway from the tournament.
Hannah Green: “Definitely never giving up. I really thought I was completely out of it from round one, and it probably helped that the greens got a little bit firmer and the wind picked up a little bit.
“I’ve just got to make sure that I don’t get too ahead of myself. It’d be nice if I got off to a better start in tournaments because when I play my best on the first day, that’s when I really can be in contention.
“I’m super excited for the next couple of events that I have on my calendar, and I’ll take this in a positive way.”
