Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur has decided to withdraw from the men’s singles competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics after failing to recover from the hip injury sustained at Wimbledon earlier this month. However, he will play in doubles.
Alex de Minaur, sixth in the world tennis rankings, was seeded fifth for the men’s singles competition at Paris 2024 and was drawn to play Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff (world No. 34) in the opening round match on Sunday.
The Aussie ace, however, lost his race against time to get himself fit for the tournament. Having had to pull out of his Wimbledon quarter-final match against Novak Djokovic after sustaining a hip injury in the previous round, Alex de Minaur was undergoing rehab.
Despite the Australian medical team’s best efforts, de Minaur ran out of time and won’t be fit enough to play singles tennis at Paris 2024.
This will be a big blow for the Aussie tennis star, who also missed out on Tokyo 2020 due to a COVID-19 infection.
However, de Minaur will be making his much-anticipated Olympic debut at Paris 2024 as he has been deemed fit enough to play doubles and will partner childhood friend Alexei Popyrin.
The Aussie duo will face a stern test in the first round as they face American fourth seeds Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram on the iconic clay courts of the Roland Garros.
