Nine Australian tennis players will be in action across five medal events at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Alex de Minaur and Matthew Ebden will headline the Aussie tennis charge with matches getting underway from July 27 at the iconic Roland Garros Stadium.
While de Minaur, currently sixth in the ATP tennis rankings, is Australia’s top-ranked singles player, Ebden is world No. 3 in doubles.
John Peers, who won the mixed doubles bronze with now-retired Ashleigh Barty at Tokyo 2020, will team up with Ebden in the men’s doubles. Peers and Ebden have been drawn against Benjamin Hassan and Hady Habib of Lebanon in the men’s doubles first round.
Ebden was also a late entry in the men’s singles competition at Paris 2024 as a replacement for injured Danish star Holger Rune. He will face Beijing 2008 bronze medallist and top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia in his opener.
Matthew Ebden will also partner Ellen Perez in the mixed doubles event. They have been seeded second and they will take on Sara Sorribes and Marcel Granollers of Spain in the opening round.
De Minaur, making his Olympic debut in Paris, will take on world No. 34 Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in the first round of the men’s singles.
The Aussie singles star, who missed out on Tokyo 2020 due to COVID-19, suffered a hip injury last month, which forced him to pull out of the Wimbledon ahead of a quarter-final clash against Djoko. De Minaur, however, is expected to recover in time to make his much-awaited Olympic debut.
De Minaur will also team up with Alexei Popyrin to face fourth seeds Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram of the USA in the men’s doubles first round. Popyrin, meanwhile, has been drawn against Nicolas Jarry of Chile in the men’s singles opening fixture while Rinky Hijikata will face Daniil Medvedev.
Ajla Tomljanovic, ranked 123rd, will be the only Australian entry in women’s singles and will go up against world No. 2 Coco Gauff of the USA in her opening match at Paris 2024.
The Australian women’s doubles pair of Ellen Perez and Daria Saville has also been drawn against top seeds Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula of the USA. Tomljanovic, on the other hand, will also partner Olivia Gadecki against Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider in the opening round of women’s doubles.
Since tennis’ Olympic debut in Athens 1896, Australian players have clinched six Olympic medals. The tally consists of one gold, one silver and four bronze so far.
The gold medal was won by the men’s doubles pair of Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge at Atlanta 1996. They also won the silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympics hosted on home soil four years later.
At Paris 2024, the tennis events will get underway on July 27 and come to a close on August 4. Medals will be on offer in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
