A human bone was found around 8 a.m. on Tuesday at the Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs. The El Paso County Coroner determined that the remains were human, prompting the Colorado Springs Police Department to open an investigation.

A section of the 27-hole course was closed for most of Tuesday but reopened on Wednesday. The case will be treated as a homicide “until or unless our investigation reveals otherwise,” according to a CSPD spokesperson. The findings will be tested to identify the age, identity, and potential cause of death, but that will most likely take weeks, maybe months.

CSPD said they will not comment on how long the remains had been at the course or provide any further details until the testing is completed.

KOAA News5 reported that officers were “searching with shovels” around the creek near the sixth hole about 100 yards from the main clubhouse. “I’m shocked and surprised,” said Joe Wilson, a local golfer. “This doesn’t happen on Patty Jewett.”
