Perth’s original pink Pretzel Australia location has been forced to shut up shop stating: “It hasn’t been possible to secure our stay here any longer due to the State Government PCC (Perth Cultural Centre) renovation works”.

Pretzel Australia opened its first store out of a pink shipping container in Northbridge and has since been a staple location for people in the area and those enjoying a night out.

The stores founder Brittany Garbutt announced the closure on Sunday and told PerthNow: “Honestly It’s heartbreaking. I am heartbroken.”

“It’s not nice to feel like you are letting people down.

“I am so sad for my staff, I feel like a little piece of magic is being taken away and for what? It feels senseless and completely avoidable.

“Not all new things are better. Not all renovations are upgrades. Spending money doesn’t always mean making community and connections.”

Pretzel Australia is looking to maintain its connection to Northbridge even if it means opening a store in a new location.

“Northbridge is our home, and I’ll continue to figure out how we can be apart of it – even if it’s not that specific spot,” Ms Garbutt said.

Since the original Northbridge opening in 2020, Pretzel Australia locations have popped up all over WA and Victoria.

The PCC’s redevelopment is due to kick off in January and is a $55 million project designed to rejuvenate the centre.

According to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the State Government will be contributing $45 million to the overall costs and the Federal Government will add the additional $10 million.
