MONTREAL — One of the more bizarre incidents in a thrilling afternoon session Saturday at Royal Montreal Golf Club came in the last match on the course, with Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley taking on Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im in foursomes. Scheffler and Henley would eventually win that match, 3 and 2, but on the final hole of play, the par-4 16th, something happened outside the ropes that ended up involving both Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, and his father, Scott Scheffler.

It’s taken some time to make sense of what we saw, and all parties involved have clearly made it a point to move on—they’ve said what they’re going to say, which isn’t much—but here, point by point, is everything we know.

1. The incident first became broadly known when Gabby Herzig of The Athletic, who was following the group, shared a short summary of what she’d seen on X. As you see from the post, a fan made a derogatory comment about Meredith Scheffler, the World No. 1’s wife:

A second source on the scene confirmed that there was a good deal of shouting between Scott and the fan, and that the caddie was “really pissed off.”

2. Herzig also shared a photo showing Scott on the rope line, and you can see the elder Scheffler there as well.

3. Golf.com later reported, and Golf Digest independently confirmed, that Scheffler’s dad was the first to hear the insult, and to approach the fan, which ended up bringing Ted Scott into the mix.

4. Herzig confirmed with Scott Scheffler that the fan was then kicked out of the grounds by security.

5. Scheffler (the player) didn’t speak afterward, but Henley commented on the incident, answering a question about whether it was distracting. “No, not really,” he said. “Once it happened, we just kind of refocused and got back in it.”

6. That’s the most we got from any player or captain, and Scheffler’s parents later refused to speak on record to a reporter.

Clearly, this leaves a lot that we don’t know, such as what the fan actually said, and how intense the interaction was between the fan, Scheffler and Scott. With Sunday singles set to kick off imminently, it’s unlikely we’ll get much more, if anything, but it’s the latest example of just how tense these team match play events can get when a loud, partisan crowd includes a small proportion of fans who step over the line.
