Five Australians will line up at the Byron Nelson tournament at the TPC Craig Ranch course in McKinney, Texas on the PGA Tour this week, with defending champion Jason Day joining Adam Scott as former winners of the event.

It’s a light field at the Nelson, with the absence of stars like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy creating an unusual stat in that three Aussies – Day, Min Woo Lee and Scott – are in the top four lines of betting. Day is the $15 second favourite while Lee, who has not won on the PGA Tour, and Scott, who has not won in four years, are on the third line of betting at $21.

The event has been kind to Australians over the years, though it rotated among courses around the Dallas area. Peter Thomson (1956), Bruce Devlin (1969), Scott (2008), Day (2010, 2023) and Steven Bowditch (2015) are Australians to have won the Nelson.

This year, Day and Scott will be joined by fellow veteran Aaron Baddeley, as well as Lee and Harrison Endycott.

The PGA Tour’s top players resting after a busy April that featured the Masters, the RBC Heritage, a Signature event, as well as last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans which did roll out several stars including eventual winners McIlroy and Shane Lowry.

Jordan Spieth is the biggest name in the field at the Nelson and the betting favourite given he is a three-time major winner and a Dallas native. Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim are among the names in the field.

LIV GOLF SINGAPORE

The LPGA Tour takes a week off after Aussie Hannah Green won lat week’s event in Los Angeles, so let’s look at the next stop on LIV Golf – Singapore. It will be a comedown for the circuit after its blockbuster Adelaide event last week, attended by 94,000 and watched on TV by many more. Only several thousand people are likely to attend LIV Singapore at the exclusive Sentosa Golf Club. Talor Gooch is the defending champion while Cam Smith’s Ripper GC are fresh off their teams victory at LIV Adelaide. Look for Smith to have a good showing in Singapore and Jon Rahm, having tied third in Adelaide, should challenge for a maiden LIV victory.

Greg Norman needs more second-hand tickets? According to the Open Championship, maybe

According to London’s The Telegraph, two-time Open winner and LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman might need to consider a ticket resale platform to grab a pass to this year’s Open at Troon. The R&A’s director of communications, Mike Woodcock, said he wasn’t aware of an invitation sent to Norman nor has he seen his name on the purchased tickets list.

Norman created headlines when he was not invited to the four-hole past champions celebration at the 150th Open at St Andrews in 2022.

“I don’t think there’s a G. Norman (on the list),” Woodcock said at an Open Championship media day. “I think they would have let me know if there was. So I’m not aware that he’s bought a ticket so far. Obviously, there are tickets still available on the resale platform or hospitality. He’s very welcome to look there.”
