Punter’s big Cummins call after ‘soul searching’

Punter’s big Cummins call after ‘soul searching’

Australian legend Ricky Ponting has heaped praise on Test skipper Pat Cummins after the side’s latest series victory over India.

The 31-year-old starred with the ball once again on home soil, taking a team-high 25 wickets at 21.36 and terrorising members of the Indian batting line-up.

But according to Ponting, who led the Test side for nearly a decade, it was Cummins’ leadership that was the most impressive part of his game.

After going down 1-0 in Perth, the right-arm quick took the proverbial bull by the horns on numerous occasions to lift the Aussies, ultimately winning the series 3-1.

“When you lose a Test match like that against another strong opposition side, you do have to do a bit of soul searching and do a lot of talking,” Ponting told The ICC Review.

“I think the break gave the Australians a chance to get away and put the media speculation and the white noise away. Pat has grown as a player, he’s grown as a leader.

“Whenever things get tough as captain, he doesn’t look around to anybody else. He brings himself straight back into the attack and more often than not gets the job done.”

Cummins was well-supported from a bowling perspective by the likes of Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc, who both had clutch moments at crucial times in the series.

While there was criticism over the lack of first-class cricket prior to the first Test, Ponting admitted it worked out well for the hosts.

“As we saw, it ended up being great management because those guys ended up being at their best at the back end of the five Test matches,” he said.

Australia will now turn their attention to a two-game series against Sri Lanka, before a defence of their World Test Championship against South Africa in June. The squad for the Sri Lanka tour was named on Thursday, with Cummins taking personal leave to remain in Australia for the upcoming birth of his second child.
