After months of battling sweltering heat, the southwestern United States is finally experiencing cooler temperatures as the year winds down. Snowbirds are making their way back to states like Arizona, along with golfers in search of a late-season golf trip.
Desert golf can be an enjoyable experience this time of the year — provided you have the right tools. While you don’t need to worry about making adjustments to the equipment setup, many golfers who play desert layouts regularly carry a “desert club” in the bag to get the ball back in play.
In most cases, it’s an old 8-iron or wedge that’s suffered “desert rash” in the past. Save the scratches and gouges for something other than your gamer set.
You could also pick up PXG’s latest club offering that’s specifically built for off-road play. Designed for brutal lies, the Desert Club is made from hardened raw 17-4 stainless steel to withstand scratches and wear.
Instead of simply whipping up a wedge with a durable head material, designers also opted to get creative and go with more loft (44 degrees) and a longer shaft (36.5 inches).
The combination allows for increased clubhead speed and additional carry distance when it’s needed. On shorter shots, the extra loft and mid-bounce sole enhance the club’s playability, allowing for a slightly open or closed clubface.
So as not to confuse the club with the rest of your set, PXG added a cactus stamp on the sole that can also be found dotting the cavity.
The PXG Desert Club retails for $100 and can be customized with several different shaft and grip offerings. Unfortunately, the ability to get out of jail from every lie off the fairway is not included.
