The sixth-seeded Qinwen Zheng of the People’s Republic of China will take on 13th-seed Donna Vekic of Croatia in the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s singles tennis final on Saturday.
The Qinwen Zheng vs Donna Vekic match will be broadcast live in Australia. The women’s singles final begins at 8:00 PM AEST on Saturday.
Qinwen Zheng has had a solid run at the Paris 2024 Olympics tennis competition. Only seventh in the tennis rankings, she beat top seed and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland in the semi-finals in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
Iga Swiatek is a two-time Grand Slam winner. The 21-year-old Qinwen Zheng, meanwhile, has reached the final of a Grand Slam just once, at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Earlier, after winning her first two rounds in straight sets, Qinwen Zheng edged out USA’s Emma Navarro 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 in a three-hour-long match to make the quarter-finals. In the quarters, the Chinese player defeated three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in a three-hour match.
Donna Vekic, meanwhile, has lost only one set so far in this tournament. The world No. 21 too has been in stellar form in Paris – having defeated former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Canada in the second round and world No. 2 Coco Gauff of the USA in the third – both in straight sets.
In the semi-finals, the Croatian defeated Slovakia’s Anna Karolína Schmiedlova 6-4, 6-0.
Donna Vekic and Qinwen Zheng have played each other two times at the highest level, winning a match each.
The 28-year-old Vekic is appearing at the Summer Games for the second time, having lost in the third round at Tokyo 2020. For Qinwen Zheng, this is her Olympic debut. Both will be vying for their country’s first tennis gold in a singles event on Saturday.
China and Croatia have each won a gold medal in tennis at the Summer Olympics – both in women’s doubles.
