As Discovery Parks Chief Marketing Officer Lahnee White explains, these popular southern tourist regions transform into serene winter escapes.
“The winter months bring a slower pace, allowing visitors to experience the natural beauty and attractions in a different light,” Lahnee tells 9Travel.
“The cooler weather also opens up a range of different experiences, whether it be relaxing tranquil beach walks, exploring the abundant winter greenery in national parks or taking it easy by a fire at a cellar door.
“These regions offer an opportunity to truly connect with nature and the local community, providing a sense of peace and relaxation.”
There are four regions in particular you might consider exploring with your family this winter. Here we share why they could make for the perfect getaway.
The Fleurieu Peninsula is near Adelaide, in South Australia and is well known for its wine regions, notably McLaren Vale.
During this time of year, there are more than 60 events and reasons to head down south, including the Fleurieu Food Festival in August, bringing together the region’s finest winemakers, cheesemakers, brewers, farmers, and chefs.
Apart from great food, wine and art, you’ll also have a pick of great hikes like the Heysen Trail and other activities including Whale watching.

“In winter, the Fleurieu Peninsula, showcases its stunning coastal landscapes in a different light,” Lahnee shares. “The dramatic cliffs and serene beaches can be enjoyed in solitude, and the local wineries offer inviting, fireside tastings.”
Where to stay: Discovery Parks – Goolwa is located within walking distance of the township of Goolwa and is a great place to base your family while exploring the region.
From water activities such as kayaking, to cruising on an iconic Echuca/Moama paddle steamer. Lahnee says winter in the Murray Region “highlights its picturesque river scenery” making the destination “perfect for leisurely river cruises or fishing in calm waters”.
You’ll be able to experience a host of winter events like the Winter Blues Festival and Moama Lights. Plus there’s the famous Silo art trail.
And there are plenty of accommodation options in the region as well.
Where to stay: You’ll be spoiled for choice between Discovery Parks – Echuca, Moama Waters, Nagambie Lakes, Moama West, and Maidens Inn – Moama.
There’s no going past a visit to the world-famous Margaret River wine region in south-west Western Australia. Not to mention the destination is a mecca for outdoor activities, food, wine and art.
“The South-West of Western Australia, with its lush forests and charming towns, becomes an ideal setting for exploring local arts and crafts, gourmet food trails, and secluded beaches,” Lahnee explains.
Where to stay: There’s the brand new Discovery Park – Margaret River located just 15 minutes from town, or you can set yourself up at Discovery Parks – Bunbury Foreshore or Busselton.
Quaint villages and seaside resort towns along the coast coupled with lush pastures, rolling hills and rugged National Parks inland, is what makes southern NSW a special place to head on a family holiday.
Pambula, for example, is a town in Bega Valley Shire on the far south coast of New South Wales, around 450 kilometres south of Sydney. It’s got a country feel, is big on history and surrounded by stunning nature and national parkland, making it a highlight of the Sapphire Coast.
All over the region you’ll find things to do, including a host of winter events and other activities.
“Southern New South Wales’ stunning coastal and inland vistas offer peaceful retreats, with opportunities for whale watching, bushwalking, and enjoying the fresh, crisp winter air,” Lahnee says.
Where to stay: Discovery Parks – Pambula Beach, Eden, or Narooma Beach are all affordable options for the whole family.
