Racing officials scramble after mystery track poisoning

The mystery surrounding the Gold Coast race track being poisoned has deepened, with this weekend’s Magic Millions meeting under a cloud.

The carnival was thrown into chaos late last week when Saturday’s twilight meeting was forced into a move to the Sunshine Coast due to poor conditions.

Initial indications were that the track had been deliberately poisoned, potentially by anti-racing protesters, but there has been no confirmation at this stage.

Speaking on SEN Radio, Queensland Racing chief executive Jason Scott cast doubt on a deliberate attack as officials scramble for this coming Saturday’s race day.

“I would be surprised if it is vandals,” he said.

“We will make a decision by Thursday morning, we can’t have the mad rush, we know there is a lot of people flying into Queensland … so we won’t drag this on.

“We are going to make every endeavour to run there.

“They tell me they can have it by Wednesday morning at the worst and then we need to put some horses over it.”

Some reports have suggested the staff may have made an error in their preparations and are trying to pin it on protesters.

The 10-race card, which headlines a massive week that includes sales of the country’s best yearlings, is the biggest race day of the year on the Gold Coast.
