Roth speaks on Boomers role

Many think he’d be the perfect man to lead the Boomers to the next Olympics, but Scott Roth has taken himself out of the running.

“I truly believe the Boomers should be coached by an Australian, so for me I would never accept that invitation,” he told SEN Tasmania.

“To me that is where you should look to have a national coach.”

While the head coaching role is out of the question, Roth didn’t rule himself out of being part of the campaign.

“I would try and help them in some other capacity. It makes sense for smaller countries with limited resources to get an import coach, but here (in Australia) they have all the resources, great academies and coaches in the NBA, Europe and here,” he added.

Others like Dean Vickerman and Trevor Gleeson have also been linked to the role and Roth believes it’s a way to create a coaching pathway.

“When I first got here and even more now, I walk on egg shells because I really believe that there is no pathway between Basketball Australia and coaches coming into the NBL,” he said.

“I think having five import coaches out of the 10 can really be quite distressing for coaches who are working hard to get into the NBL.

“I think there are some really wonderful Australian coaches but ultimately they can’t get to an NBL team … And only having 10 teams there isn’t a big variety of places you can coach, so the pathway to me has been stymied in some senses.

“I think they (the NBL) have to be quite careful about what that looks like over the next year or two.”
