‘Sad situation’: High-profile coach banned amid WTA probe

The coach of world No.6 Elena Rybakina has been banned from the Australian Open amid an ongoing WTA investigation into a potential conduct breach.

Stefano Vukov was dumped by the 25-year-old last August, but recent indications from Rybakina on social media were that the pair had reunited.

However, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, the coach has been provisionally suspended and won’t be granted access to Melbourne Park.

“The WTA can confirm that Stefano Vukov is currently under a provisional suspension pending an independent investigation into a potential breach of the WTA code of conduct,” a statement from the WTA read.

“As part of the provisional suspension, Mr Vukov is not eligible to obtain a WTA credential at this time.

“While the WTA does not typically comment on active investigations, we believe it is necessary to clarify this matter due to recent public statements that misrepresent the situation. We will not provide further details at this point in time.”

It has been alleged that Vukov’s harsh and intense approach has drawn the ire of the sport’s governing body, as well as former players.

American tennis great Pam Shriver recently took to social media to take aim at Vukov and has long been vocal about the coach’s conduct.

“It’s time for our entire sport to finally stand up to known abuse and cult-like manipulations of players,” she said via X earlier this week.

“This is a very sad situation and my prayers are with ER [Elena Rybakina].”

Rybakina has been playing in the United Cup for Kazakhstan and will feature in the semi finals on Saturday night against world No.2 Iga Swiatek.
