19-year-old Sam Konstas has been backed by former Australian opener Simon Katich.
Konstas had a flying start to his Shield season and could be a genuine option against India in their upcoming series.
Konstas burst onto the scene against Victoria as he scored two centuries in under ten first-class appearances. Despite the suggestions of him being too young, he has received support from Katich. The former Australian opener believes if Kontas can score runs against India A, the selectors should consider him for the main series as well. He said (via Sportfm):
“If he’s making runs and can do it in these next few weeks under pressure, particularly in the A-Games against India A, then I can’t see a reason why he shouldn’t be looked at. It doesn’t matter what age he is. If he’s young and hungry and and got a good head on his shoulders, like everyone’s talking about, then why not?”
He added:
“If he goes in there and does well, everyone will be saying it’s an inspired move. I think you’ve got to think positively about these things and I think if he can handle the pressure of these next few weeks, then he’ll be in with a big show.”

It is worth noting that earning the call-up to the first team is particularly unheard of with just 10 first-class matches.
Konstas’ case was not made any easier when he was out for a duck in the first innings.
