Scottie Scheffler’s 2025 PGA Tour debut will have to wait at least another couple of weeks.
The world No.1 announced overnight that he has withdrawn from the American Express event next week. Scheffler had previously pulled out of the PGA Tour’s season opener at Kapalua due to a hand injury suffered on Christmas Day.
“After consulting with my medical team, I have made the decision to withdraw from next week’s American Express tournament to give my injury more time to heal,” Scheffler said in a statement posted on Instagram. “I am still hopeful to begin my 2025 Season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.”
On December 27, Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, issued a statement saying, “On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass.”
He added that, “Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery,” and that Scheffler has been told he “should be back to 100% in three to four weeks”.
The AT&T Pebble Beach is set for January 30 to February 2. After the Sentry event, it is the PGA Tour’s second signature event of the new season.
Scheffler is coming off a historic season in which he won seven official PGA Tour events. He also won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics and Tiger Woods’ unofficial event, the Hero World Challenge.
In December, Scheffler joined Woods by becoming the only other golfer to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award for a third consecutive year.
