Selectors make call on injured star for overseas tour

Josh Hazlewood is set to miss Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka due to injury.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the 33-year-old seamer won’t be part of the travelling squad when it’s announced later this week.

Hazlewood was limited to just two appearances against India, with a calf issue and side strain putting a dampener on his Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign.

The right-arm quick will join skipper Pat Cummins as an absentee for the Aussies, who will head to Sri Lanka for a two-game series beginning on January 29.

With a busy schedule on the horizon, headlined by the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June, before all attention turns to The Ashes next summer.

Hazlewood will remain a focal point of the Aussie squad for both fixtures, but the rise of Scott Boland has placed some doubt over the team’s first-choice attack.

Boland, along with Mitchell Starc, will headline the fast-bowling unit in Sri Lanka.

Jhye Richardson, Sean Abbott and Michael Neser are also options for the 16-man squad, which selectors are hoping to finalise by Thursday.
