‘Should be first name on the sheet’: Breakout Aussie star facing World Cup snub as likely squad revealed

Breakout Aussie cricket star Jake Fraser-McGurk has reportedly been snubbed from the nation’s T20 World Cup squad.

Code Sports reports the 22-year-old, who has lit up the Indian Premier League with Delhi Capitals but has never played a T20 international, will not be named in the 15-man squad later this week.

Steve Smith will also miss the tournament, to be played in the West Indies and US starting in June, in his first omission from an Australian squad while available in over a decade.

A ridiculous 84 off 27 balls on Saturday night against Mumbai Indians, plus 65 off 18 deliveries against Sunrisers Hyderabad, saw a growing push for Fraser-McGurk to open the batting for Australia.

But selectors George Bailey, Tony Dodemaide and coach Andrew McDonald will reportedly stay loyal to the expected squad with Cameron Green, Ashton Agar, Nathan Ellis, Matthew Wade and Josh Inglis all set to be included.

David Warner will also hold his place despite a form slump in the IPL.

“The selectors have to be thinking about him now, with the team just a few days away from being selected,” former Australian captain Michael Clarke said of Fraser-McGurk last week.

“It’s hard to leave him out to be honest, the way he’s played so far.

“I imagine conditions will be pretty similar in the Caribbean, slower wickets with that extra power in the Powerplay needed.

“He’s done his chances no harm, and I’d love to see him in that squad.”

Mark Waugh tweeted: “(Fraser-McGurk) should (be) the first name on the sheet.

“Absolute certainty to be picked and open the batting in the World Cup.”

Australia will play England, Oman, Namibia and Scotland in the opening stage of the tournament with the top two teams in that five-nation group advancing.
